Silence Is Accurate’s Art Gallery is the newest addition to the growing creative community in Woodstock, Cape Town.
Silence Is Accurate (SIA) is an art gallery and consultancy located in Woodstock, Cape Town and NoMad, NYC.
SIA was established in 2015 as an online visual arts platform. Its content consisted of  interviews with emerging artists, in their studios, about their creative process. The platform also established itself as the go-to guide for art gallery openings and ongoing exhibitions in NYC. In 2016, SIA expanded into an arts consultancy specializing in site-specific installation, neon and contemporary art.
SIA’s art gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town will open its doors on 13 September, 2017.

Focused on the next generation of collectors, SIA showcases emerging artists working across different mediums. SIA aims to bridge local and international artist communities and provide its artists with greater exposure to new markets. The gallery’s rotating two-person exhibitions center around works that create a dialogue about our generation’s identity, our environment, our questions and relationships. Collaborating with process-driven artists, SIA aims to inspire and continue conversations that address the human condition across time and culture.

B.1987 in Georgia, USA
Lives and works in Brooklyn, NY
Silence Is Accurate Exhibitions: Ephemeral, 4 January - 3 February, 2018

BIO: “My practice is about the exploration between the digital and the physical. I emulate digital modes of representational space produced physically through paint. Sourcing different imagery from stock photos, movie scenes and photographs, I combine them to create the overall image which plays into familiar archetypes of anonymous online identities. Modes of incidence from the digital sources are retained in the overall painting through the shapes, the colors, and the gradients. Digital elements are achieved through the hard edge lines in paint which translates as the pen tool from Photoshop. Through the process, the paint builds up giving tactile experiences in a digital language.”

Her paintings combine her exquisite sense of touch, incorporating multiple mediums and textures created by the process of pouring. She pushes the boundaries between abstraction and representation, drawing on imagery as wide-ranging as the mundane found-in-suburbia, manmade bodies of water, and sci-fi imagery, all the while referencing the great American tradition of Color Field Painting, creating a fresh language and all her own.

Martine Johanna
B.     in Netherlands, Europe.
Lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands
Education: MFA Painting, ArtEZ – Institute of the Arts, Arnhem, NL + BFA Painting, ArtEZ – Institute of the Arts, Arnhem, NL
Silence Is Accurate Exhibitions: Ephemeral, TBD, 2018

BIO: Martine Johanna is an artist mostly known for her vivid paintings with both figurative and abstract elements. Her autobiographical works, seemingly light hearted, explore the duality between youthful naivety and anxiety-riddled adulthood. The often female figures, fierce but fragile, crowd the compositions and occupy the majority of the space gazing distractedly into the beyond. Each of the delicately rendered figures convey a sense of full immersion within their own “internal psychic landscape.” The work is imbued with a mysterious narrative and sensation of knowing that each character in the work has a full and complex history that the viewer can never fully comprehend. The paintings have a signature prismatic palette, visually stimulating and playful while expressing an underlying sense of uncertainty and unrest. Martine Johanna has had international success exhibiting extensively in the Netherlands and abroad. A background in fashion design has influenced her depiction and ease with the female figure. Inspiration for her work include a mixture of childhood and autobiographical memories and experiences, documentaries on human nature, independent films and history.

Javier Martin
B.1985 Spain, Europe.
Lives and works in Miami, Florida
Education: Self-taught
Silence Is Accurate Exhibitions: Ephemeral, 15 March - 14 April, 2018 (solo exhibition)

BIO: Javier Martin is a multidisciplinary artist who bases his creative exploration on the careful observation of his surroundings, detecting semiotic relationships that might otherwise pass by unnoticed to an unperceptive viewer. With this approach, the artist constructs situations that invite reflection on impending matters in today’s world.
Martin has equally experimented in painting, collage, sculpture, performance art and video art. Through his work, he proposes relationships among forms, surfaces, textures, and scenarios in which objects used on a daily basis relate to each other in unexpected ways. He consistently demonstrates his capacity to masterfully manipulate and related materials and situations to construct sharp visual metaphors.
His works carry eloquent meaning and profound political messages, inducing viewers to reflect on their own behavior and social responsibility.

Zio Ziegler studied at The Rhode Island School of Design and Brown University. Since graduating with a BFA from RISD in 2010, Ziegler has developed an international studio and mural practice to support his philosophy that art should be available to all. His work reflects the diverse influences of late medieval and quattrocento painting, aboriginal, African and native art, and the European graffiti movement. He paints in the belief that his paintings complete themselves by triggering self-discovery in their viewers. He currently lives and works in San Francisco.

Keeping with SIA’s reputation of creating conversations around bodies of art, the gallery's opening exhibitions will center around the curatorial theme - Ephemeral.
Ephemeral is SIA's series of two-person rotating exhibitions over 5-months, October 2017 through March 2018. Ephemeral is the result of an ongoing fascination with the rapid generation of new, fleeting identities, the histories that create them, and the space that self-understanding occupies in our viral driven era.
The exhibitions seek to examine the seeming surge of self-indulgence during unstable times, and this trait’s effect on a generation that simultaneously appears in pursuit of pure connections. Ephemeral examines the evolutions of identity during new forms of power and their potential aversion to historical accounts. An examination at whether these new narratives are driven by a need to justify one’s actions and choices or if the search of “authentic” self is comparable to self-indulgence.

Creative Gong Meditation at SIA's Summer Sound Escape in Chelsea, NYC - July 2016

“Do whatever brings you to life, then. Follow your own fascinations, obsessions, and compulsions. Trust them. Create whatever causes a revolution in your heart.”
Elizabeth Gilbert, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear

Silence Is Accurate (SIA) was founded as an online art platform. Its content consisted of  interviews with emerging artists, in their studios, about their creative process. SIA also established itself as the go-to guide for art gallery openings and ongoing exhibitions in NYC. In 2016, SIA expanded into an arts consultancy specializing in site-specific installation, neon and contemporary art. SIA’s art gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town opened its doors on 13 September, 2017.

SIA’s birth is the result of a small curiosity seed. While gallery hopping, Portia became increasingly inquisitive about the environment the artworks on exhibition were created. What was the artist thinking throughout the process? What persuaded the artist to even start? Did their studio influence the direction of the pieces?
Armed with a list of questions, she started emailing artists based in NYC and SF to ask if they would be open to an artist interview in their creative environment. “The idea was to create an artist interview archive filled with some of our generation’s most inspiring visual artists. It led to many magical studios where I interviewed incredible creators and shared that on the platform.”
New seeds were later planted: curating, consulting, an art gallery, an ongoing adventure.

SIA’s Big Magic Conversations bring together a community where we discover how various creatives started. What was their seed, how did the process unravel, ‘what causes a revolution in [their] heart’... what causes a revolution in YOURS?
Stop by for your midweek inspiration.

Sofar Sounds (an acronym for Songs from a Room) is a music events startup company, based in London, founded in 2009. The company calls itself a global community where guests and artists come together to experience music in an intimate and respectful setting at a secret concert.

Typically, three artists perform at each Sofar gig with no "opener" and no "headliner". Performers apply to be considered via a form on the website. Musicians of all genres as well as spoken word poets, comedians and even dancers are welcome to apply.
The line-up for a concert is not disclosed until the event starts; the location is announced 24 hours before the show. Guests arrive on time for the first act and are encouraged to stay for the entire show. Events are normally BYOB, and emphasis is placed on the crowd being respectful – switching off their phones and listening.

SIA is honored to host Sofar Sounds at the gallery.

Opening December 2017. More info to follow.

Portia Makoma is an independent art curator and founder of Silence Is Accurate (SIA). She has worked alongside innovative organizations that nurture artists, such as chashama, and she continues to cultivate unconventional platforms for visual arts showcases.

She launched SIA’s art gallery as an extension of her focus on emerging artists.

Portia is currently interested in work that creates a dialogue about our generation’s identity, our environment, our questions and relationships. Collaborating with process-driven artists, she aims to inspire and continue dialogues that address the human condition across time and culture.

Where does the name Silence Is Accurate originate from?
Near the end of his career, Mark Rothko abandoned all attempts at responding to those who inquired after the meaning and purpose behind his paintings. Finally responding that silence is 'so accurate'.

“For Rothko, the paintings were objects that possessed their own form and potential, and therefore, must be encountered as such. Sensing the futility of words in describing this decidedly non-verbal aspect of his work, Rothko abandoned all attempts at responding to those who inquired after its meaning and purpose, stating finally that Silence Is ‘so Accurate.’” - Wiki
